I've even seen examples of it (kind of) with player's who know the books too well. As in...DM: Yes, the boots are indeed magical. What do you do?Player: I put them on... then I run across the room. Everyone laughs at you.etc., etc, until he's tried every "magic boot" scenario he can think of. (By the way, this scene ended with- Player: Well, crap, now wha... I kick the halfling!" DM: He flies across the room. The boots are Slippers of Kicking.)I can see a book with lots of generic activation methods for trying to activate something blindly. I could also see a section of this book for deciphering scrolls. Use scroll and use wand are a bit harder to see, but possible. Maybe those chapters of the book could provide only a +1 bonus.Yeah, it'd definitely have to be a book.
