matrix d20?

this has probably been discussed before, but all that "tron" talk got me thinking . . .

I'm guessing it would be pretty similar to normal DnD, just different classes, guns, and a new mechanic called Acceleration or something.

Acceleration would be the number of partial actions that you can take in a round. Joe the Guy would have 2, an Agent would have like 20, and Neo would have like 30. I guess most of the other Nebehca . . .whatever crew had about 14 to 18, with Morpheus at 19.

maybe it'd use the firearms rules found at www.sleepingimperium.rpghost.com? that's some top-notch material, IMHO.

What kind of HP system? HP? VP / WP?

What kinds of classes?

Should this be moved to House Rules or Plots and Places?

I think that your best bet for this would be to go with a modified version of AEG's Spyrcraft rules with WP/VP, or better yet, only WP and a mechanic for dodging attacks. You could have feats and abilities that give you extra actions each round.

Or you could wait and see if Green Ronin's Mutants and Masterminds book would support something like it. I'm very interested in seeing how they handle combat damage.

Actually, I talked to the guy who was writing a matrix RPG, officially liscened and everything. I haven't heard anything for a bout a year on it though.

Guess it's goin well, neh?

personally, I'd rather make the rules myself (and with the other enworlders) than wait 6 mohnths for a book to come out.

Yeah, only WP sounds good, I could include a bullet-dodging mechanic based on Class level and acceleration.

Hehh

We had some discussion of this topic over on the Spycraft forums (www.spycraftrpg.com). One of the most interesting ideas was to use straight up Spycraft with WP/VP (the physical adept can handle folks like neo pretty easily) while in the Matrix, and then restrict characters to just WP outside the Matrix...

The tools are there :).

One of the big underriding factors in the ability of a human in the matrix was belief. Belief in their abilities within the matrix. Not to get too drawn in to the make believe world around them. It they kept that in mind and were cognizant of their abilities, they could do superhuman things. There are a number of ways you could accomplish this in d20.

1. Wis check. Make a wis check (varying DC) each time they want to do something superhuman (i.e. stop bullets, walk through walls, bullet time, super jumping, flying, etc.) The greater the task, the higher the DC.

2. Action Points - Like force points in SWRPG. You have so many that you can use to reroll various rolls. You get them back by accomplishing things important to the character or plot.

3. Matrix Rating - Each entity would have a Matrix Rating, sort of like sanity in CoC. The higher the better, the more chance you'd have to use super abilities. As you stay longer in the Matrix, the longer you exist within it's confines, your MR begins to drop. Getting in combat (or moving to the combat round in general) increases the loss of MR. There would be ways to bring it back up (refocusing, etc). If your MR ever goes to zero or lower, you basically lose all ability to effect the matrix and pretty much have to get to a phone or your screwed. People with zero matrix ratings who are still slaved into the power plant would be able to be taken over by an Agent program (as a move equiv. action if within site of the agent, perhaps a full round action if not).

Probably a good way to do it would be with the Matrix Rating you've described, and with a variation on Ken Hood's psionic's rules (www.sleepingimperium.rpghost.com) to simulate use of 'matrix hacking' to do impossible things. I like the idea of Acceleration, but it too should be built in to the retooled psionics rules.
