One thing I've found effective is trading values. I.e. If I don't play in competitive DDM, then my 3 orc champions are very, VERY, valuable. One orc champion traded on WotC's site gained me about 20 drow common and uncommons. Same goes for Dragons; how many red dragons does one need? Answer: 1, maybe 2. If you have 3, that has amazing trade potential. At DDM's zenith, I'd scour hordlings and maximinis to find the most sought after tiered group minis and see what I had of those that I didn't use (young master and a bunch of githzerai monks gained me a 5-to-one ratio on hobgoblins for my Red Hand of Doom outing). Also, get a group of people online together who are interested in "group ownership". We traded minis to eachother as need arose. Thus, when I needed a Behir, I traded my Tiamat until that part of the campaign was over. We traded back when I needed Tiamat, etc... (BTW, this one's not a good idea if you don't trust people...or happen to be a klepto). Magic the Gathering, magic cards, singles, Miniatures, Board Games, Supplies at CoolStuffInc.com. gives a discount on singles based on the total amount you've spent there. The shipping can be a little high, but it balances out after a while. Ebay stores with buy-it-now is also a good move if you're looking for certain minis that tend to go for a lot, but aren't really worth a lot (yuan-ti fall in this category). Look through all the listings and you can often find a low payment low shipping option that beats out the bidding wars (they don't last long, so purchasing is somewhat a requirement when they're found).
