As I mentioned when I posted my monstrous PC slime race (which you can find here, if you're interested), I have something of a soft spot in my heart for the monstrous and exotic races, preferring to play them above the more traditional races. Consequently, I have been sporadically working on several monstrous PC races, this one being the most recent. However, I would greatly appreciate it if you had any thoughts, concerns, or constructive criticisms about this work in progress. Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and you may increase either your Dexterity score or Constitution score by 1. Size. Medium. Speed. 30 feet. Darkvision. You can see in darkness within 60 feet of you as if it were dim light. When you do so, your vision is in black and white. Petrifying Gaze. When a creature that can see the medusa's eyes starts its turn within 30 feet of the medusa, the medusa can spend a reaction to force it to make a Constitution save. The DC for the Constitution save is 8 + the medusa's proficiency modifier + the medusa's Charisma modifier. If the creature fails the save, its speed becomes zero, and it cannot benefit from any bonus to its speed. At the beginning of each of the creature's following turns, it may attempt to break eye contact with the medusa by making a Wisdom save against the same DC described above. The condition also ends if the creature can no longer see the medusa, if the medusa is blinded or incapacitated, if the medusa uses its petrifying gaze on another creature, and can be broken if the medusa takes damage (uses the same rules as breaking concentration on a spell through taking damage). At the beginning of the medusa's turn, if a creature within 30 feet of the medusa has had its speed reduced to zero by the medusa's petrifying gaze, as an action the medusa can attempt to turn the creature to stone. The creature's HP are reduced by 2d6 (4d6 when you reach 5th level; 6d6 when you reach 11th level; and 8d6 when you reach 17th level). If the creature's HP is reduced to zero by this damage, it becomes petrified (as per the petrified condition). A creature who does not wish to risk meeting a medusa's gaze can avert its eyes while fighting the medusa. However, this means the creature cannot see the medusa. Breath of Life: The medusa can gently blow on any creature that has been petrified by her gaze and return it to living flesh and blood. A creature whose petrification is removed in this way has zero HPs and is not stablilized unless otherwise made so. Snake Hair. As an action you may attack with your snake hair as if it were an unarmed strike. You are considered to be proficient when making this attack. The snakes attack en masse, dealing a total amount of piercing damage equal to 1d4 + the medusa's Dexterity modifier. The snakes also inject the target with their venom. The target must make a Constitution save with a DC of 8 + the medusa's proficiency modifier + the medusa's Constitution modifier. If the creature fails the save, it takes 1d6 poison damage (3d6 when you reach 5th level; 5d6 when you reach 11th level; and 7d6 when you reach 17th level). Languages. Medusas speak common and one other language. Edit (March 2, 2016): added some spacing to get rid of that text-wall effect on the petrifying gaze ability (you really can't indent the first lines of paragraphs, huh). 2nd Edit (March 8, 2016): to reflect change in petrification ability.
