Mephit Familiar or Mephit Cohort?

I'm just starting a gnome sorceress, and I'm going to be focusing on rainbow/prismatic spells (Color Spray, Rainbow Beam, Rainbow Blast, Rainbow Pattern, Prismatic Ray, Prismatic Spray, Prismatic Wall, etc -- yes, the DM is allowing use of Spell Compendium).

I went with Arcane Bloodline, although Fey was very tempting. I plan to be doing a good deal of metamagic, particularly with the Rainbow Beam spell (Split Ray, Quicken Spell, Maximize Spell, etc.)

As an Arcane Bloodline Sorceress, I get the option to have a familiar or that item focus thing that grants an extra spell. If I took the item, the obvious choice would be a crystal worn around the neck that could double as the focus for the various rainbow spells that require one (and could be enchanted into an Empowering Spellshard).

However, I have this idea about having a radiant mephit as a familiar. Radiant mephits haven't been statted up to my knowledge since 2E, but I imagine they'd be based on fire mephits with SLA use of color spray, rainbow beam and some kind of light based breath weapon. Having hands and my ranks in UMD, the mephit could do the usual job of holding on to extra wands and at least spending combats with a wand of Resurgence in hand in case anyone failed a save.

OTOH, I might be able to take Leadership and have a radiant mephit as a companion. What class would such a mephit be good at? Would they really serve better as a familiar (both options cost a feat)? Or should I spend TWO feats and go for the mephit familiar AND a cohort?

I'm open to any advice,
