I wonder how Larry Elmore feels about this. Not saying he would be, or should be ashamed.. I personally think it's kind of funny.
I'm only 31, so I got started long after this art was used but I know that the red box is really iconic and meaningful for a lot of people. I totally get it.. I feel lot of nostalgia every time I see the weird jeweled cover of the 3.5 PHB. Was that painted? Was it a photograph of a real object? It always felt a little uncanny valley to me. Regardless, I get a wiggly feeling in my tummy when I see it and think back to all the fun times I had as a teen sitting around a table and thumbing through it to check how grappling worked for the seventieth time.
It's just funny to me to think someone has those feelings about the red box, and they see this and think
"Ah yes.. I can wear these underwear, and invoke those same feelings in my spouse as I disrobe in the bedroom"
