Metamagic Question!

First Post
Do Metamagics which effect different parts of a spell stack?

Example: Empowered, Extended Acid Arrow
Is this 3d4 for the first increment of time and 2d4 after or is it 3d4 for the whole extended duration?

Only the base spell is effected. So you get x rounds of empowered acid arrow, and then x rounds of normal acid arrow (for the extended meta magic feat).

Thats how I thought it was I just had a couple of people disagree with my stance on another board and I thought I'd double check.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Your welcome. And remeber, only this message board is right. All the others are very, very wrong. :D

at first I was going to say "1.5 * 2d4 for the whole duration"

But I thought about it a little, and I think Crothian is right... but incomplete in his answer.

The Damage would be 2d4 * 1.5 for the first duration then a normal 2d4 for the extra time. However, the spell duration is 1 round + 1 round/3 levels.

So, that first round does 2d4 * 1.5 for the empower. But the extend requires that the damage from round 1 also be applied in round two as well, and that damage would be another 2d4 (because it does not "see" the empower).

So damage would be
2d4 * 1.5 for round 1
+
2d4 for round 2 (from the extend)
+
2d4 * 1.5 (empower) for round 2 through round x
+
2d4 (extend only) for round x+1 through round 2x.

(I think)

g!

I'd be generous and make it 3d4 for each round of its effect, including all the extended rounds.

After all, if someone used empowered, extended sleep, I wouldn't make the creatures additionally slept by the empowerment wake up before the extended duration started.

If you empower and enlarge a cone of cold, does the whole cone do the extra damage?

Silly examples, but do you get my point?

The non-stacking of maximise and empower is obviously the touchstone when trying to think about how metamagic stacks, since that example is clearly given. I think it makes sense when looking at metamagic which affects the same component of the spell (they both affect damage). When the metamagic affects different components (damage/range/duration) I think it is simplest to allow them to fully improve one another. After all, in the example above the empowered extended Acid Arrow is a 5th level spell... and even with my ruling is nowhere near as powerful as Cone of Cold or Cloudkill...

Cheers

Could it be, that metamagics that affect the same base characteristic are based on the same base only?

Maximize and empower both affect the variable parts, so both are worked out from the base, but empower and extend both affect different parts, so both should full stack.

That, at least, sounds logical to me! :)

Bye
