mid- to high-level familiars

i am looking for a familiar for my archivist 5/ wizard 1/ alienist 4

i want something that can fight, and something that has interesting abilities, or something that it is good at other than just delivering touch attacks.

maybe like a displacer beast or something, i dunno. i was hoping that people could suggest some interesting familiars, what level it would be appropriate to have them at, and why. things that arent already suggested in core books.

Displacer beasts aren't available as familiars.

Also, note that to gain a nonstandard familiar, such as an imp, you must take the Improved Familiar feat.

Complete Warrior has a number of larger monsters that can be taken when the Improved Familiar feat is taken. No displacer beast though. Also, an eyeball beholderkin is neat if your caster happens to be neutral evil. See Monsters of Faerûn and the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting books for details.

thanks for the advice. maybe what i am looking for is an animal companion instead of a familiar? is this possible?
