We’re pleased to announce that we’ve reached agreements with the authors of our upcoming fiction lines. Paul Kemp will be writing the Midnight trilogy and Thomas Reid will be authoring the Dragonstar novels. Both Paul and Thomas are veterans of Wizards of the Coast’s Forgotten Realms fiction line, and we look forward to bringing their talents to the exciting worlds of Midnight and Dragonstar.
The first novels of each trilogy are scheduled for release in the summer of 2004. Check the Web site for previews, author interviews, and other news in the coming months.
Paul S. Kemp
Paul Kemp is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the University of Michigan law school. When he's not writing, he practices corporate law in Detroit. He has written several works in Wizards of the Coast’s Forgotten Realms line, most of them revolving around his signature character, Erevis Cale.
His reading tastes run the gamut from Shakespeare to Tom Clancy. He's particularly fond of Milton, and religious themes tend to trickle into his writing despite his best efforts to the contrary. A well-written fantasy short story is a work of art -- some of Michael Swanwick's work astounds him. His philosophy on writing? Make it dark, make it gritty, and above all, make it believable. Characters drive plots, not the other way around. Also, a nitrogen pour is better than anything CO2 can ever aspire to.
The best advice on life that he ever received was from an undergraduate college professor in political science: Always extend yourself intellectually; that's the only way you'll ever grow. He tries to keep that advice in mind at all times. He also tries to hum the theme song from Shaft several times a day. After all, he is the private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks. Damn straight.
Thomas M. Reid
Thomas was born in a snowstorm in the mountains of Fort Collins, Colorado, two days before the Christmas of 1966. Growing up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, he whiled away his youth playing Dungeons & Dragons and driving his parents’ 1953 Wyllis Jeep into the mud. In high school, Thomas performed with the marching, jazz, and symphonic bands, and he once ran over his own trombone with his car.
Eventually, Thomas found his way to Austin, where he met his wife Teresa while earning a B.A. in History from the University of Texas in 1989. Right after graduating, he began to make a living building wooden swing sets, just like every other well-paid history major. Then, one fateful day, he answered a TSR advertisement in the back of Dragon Magazine seeking professional editors, so he and Teresa moved to Wisconsin in the fall of 1991.
Thomas eventually felt the need to return to his roots, and today he works as a freelance author and editor in the greater Austin area with his beautiful wife and three boys, Aidan, Galen, and Quinton—along with two cats named Mystra and Selune. He has four novels published to date, including Gridrunner, The Temple of Elemental Evil, The War of the Spider Queen’s Insurrection, and Forged. His fifth novel, The Sapphire Crescent, is due out in November of this year.
