It's published by Fantasy Flight Games, and they describe it as "Epic Fantasy in an Age of Shadow." It's a 3E compatible game set in a world in which the forces of an evil god won for a change. This resulted in a nearly complete collapse of human civilization (agriculture, trade, communication have all fallen apart), and in a world composed of thousands of little states ruled by the those who can impose order and the constant threat of rampaging orc armies. The Elven and Dwarven civilizations still hold out, but they're basically fighting a losing battle. The PCs are, obviously the heroes, which is a pretty hard job... Non-humans are killed on sight, as is anyone carrying a weapon. Common people distrust strangers, and are likely to turn you in in exchange for food - gold is worthless, because you can't eat it. Magic items are rare, and can be tracked down by agents of the dark god. On the other hand, every character is assumed to be the descendant of a heroic bloodline, which gives you new abilities at each level - this can range from things that make you a much better spellcaster, to innate healing, to natural armor and damage resistance, to incredible proficiency with all weapons... Very powerful abiltites, generally, there to compensate for how badly the odds are stacked against you and the limited access to magical items. All in all, very dark, pretty gritty, and great for epic stories but not very suitable for more mercenary players who measure their advancement in gold and magical loot.
