Military positions in a "squad"?

As others have said you will have problems finding fitting names.
The idea of squads as combat unit is very modern. Before the advent of repeating firearms battles were only fought by (more or less) disciplined formations. There was no room on the battlefield for small groups of independent men as they could not affect the battle at all.
Sure, terms for small units of men existed but either only for organizational purposes or for specific functions (outriders, plunderers, hunters, etc.).
The roles they had back then referred to their armament , social standing or in some rare cases other unique things like pay grades. So either use those or invent your own names.

That's a lot of great info. More than I expected. Thanks for the replies so far. There is a lot for me to mine ideas from in one page!

Luckily, we're playing a fantasy game and not a real world earth militaristic simulation game. So I really don't think using terms such as "squad" is going to cause my players to feel less immersed in the game world. :p

I do like some of the alternative suggestions for "squads". I may implement them just to make the situation appear more exotic.

Also, this is a planar game and this particular war is taking place on Arcadia. One thing I love about Planescape is that there really are no limits to what is "believable" or not. I can use terms like "squad" and if questioned about it, just say, "well this particular petitioner came from a world where they referred to their smaller units as "squads". :D

1st man Lead scout: Navigation and tracking
2nd Team Leader: decision maker Selects route and provides cover for scout
3rd First Flank Scout: Support weapon and radio plus assist on navigation also is Team sniper
4th Second Flank Scout: Support weapon and Team weapon specialist
5th Assistant Team Leader: Second decision maker supervises counter tracking of rear scout
6th Rear Scout: Counter Tracking and watching for signs of pursuit Team Demolition specialist

Most of the roles here are for real world military. They don't just march along until they meet an enemy they have contact drills based on where a threat comes from and what their response is going to be. Most D&D players I have played with don't particularly like having a boss in the party let alone two. They are more concerned with what buff to cast and when. They often do not really want to consider tactical positioning plans beyond marching order.
