I've heard that the low-fat varieties tend to be lower quality milk, and therefore less healthy. On top of that, I can't stand the taste of skim. I usually refuse to drink it unless it's at least 2%, and I really prefer whole (3%).

Brand name means a lot to me also, because I really can taste the difference between brands. I'm loyal to a certain brand of organic milk because I like the way it tastes.

Another criterion - one that wasn't available in the poll - is packaging. I only buy opaque containers of milk, because I've heard that exposure to light makes it go bad more quickly. Another reason I buy my particular brand of organic milk is that they use opaque paper cartons.
The quality versus fat content is a myth. One of the things that nutritionists will tell you is that lower fat is better for you. (although during youth (2-16) , that may not be the case), I started drinking 2% in basic training and then switched to 1% (BTW Skim and 1% are NOT always the same thing) Skim is basically white colored water with a bit of milky goodness added. 1% is still milk, containing 1% milk fat, however, each brand is different so check carefully if it is a concern to you.

My order of importance:

1. Health/Brand - I'm lactose intolerant, so I can only drink Lactaid milk. It's regular milk, just without lactose.

2. Shelf Placement - I only buy my milk from Wal-Mart because the only other local grocery stores keep their milk in open refrigerators. Normally, Lactaid milk keeps a while (it's expiration date is months aways), however every single time I've bought it from an open refrigerator, it's either bad already or goes bad within days. This type of milk needs to be kept cold and the open refrigerators just don't cut it.

3. Health - 2% milk.

4. Size - I drink a lot of milk, so I buy it by the 1/2 gallon (the largest size of Lactaid). I guess I'm making up for all the years I couldn't drink it. :)

My mother is lactose intolerant and buys the Albertsons brand non-lactose milk.

I didn't know you could do that. All the stores I've been to have their dairy behind a closed door (besides cheese and like). I'm really sensitive to dairy, too. If I don't follow the expiration date exactly, I get sick.

That is almost sig worthy. Needs something about Cthulhu for true sig-worthiness ;)

When I moved into my house I found out that my neighborhood had dairy service. They gave out a free half gallon for people to try. The quality of the milk was such that I was hooked, and have been buying their product since. It's been about seven years or so. I but 1% milk two gallons at a time (just me, I drink a lot of milk) each week. It is delivered once a week. I only opted down to the 1% because I don't need any more calories in me than I can spare. In truth I prefer whole, but I am sufficiently used to 1% that it doesn't bug me. The dairy milk is organic, but I don't consider that anything but a sham anyway. The quality and delivery are why I buy it.

But in my experience, the milk doesn't stay as fresh in the carton as it does in a jug (maybe it's because the carton doesn't have a lid to tighten).

The milk I buy in paper cartons has a plastic cap in the lid, so you don't have to break open the paper. That's probably why it stays fresh for so long - much longer than the milk you'll find in other kinds of packaging.
