"Mind's Eye" PrC's Balanced?

Shirt Guy John

First Post
I was recently re-reading through the Mind's Eye section (of which I am a good fan) of the Wizards website. When I was reading through the PrC's contained therein, it dawned on me that although they gain a bunch of class abilities, they lose almost no aspect of the base class (ussually Psion) from which they come. Are they balanced? At all? Even a little bit?

Try playing a base psion. You'll see that the psion is unbalanced. It is much weaker than the other core classes.

The only PrC that might be unbalanced is the Sangehirn, and you can simply take away 1-2 manifester levels if you think it's too strong.

Well that's what I was thinking (the psion being underbalanced) vut as I have not actually played one in quite a while, i didn't want to say anything.

Any other comments?

I think Psions work fine as is. Even better with ITCK (obviously!)

Are the PrC at WotC balanced? Maybe. Never really tried them. Most of them look okay. The Sangehirn becomes damn near unkillable sure, but I would say its probably the strongest one there.

I wouldn't mind taking 1 or 2 manifester levels from it. Most of the others are pretty good though, IMO.

Balanced by what standard? There are many official PrCs for wizards, sorcerers, and clerics that gain a whole lot and give up very little. And these are the most powerful characters in the game! It makes creating your own PrCs somewhat of a juggling act, as you can either balance it against the core classes, or you can balance it against the official prestige classes that are already out.

Bottom line, the psionic PrCs appear more or less as balanced as what's in the splatbooks and other supplements. And there are still too few choices for a Psychic Warrior.

At the end of this month there will be two more Psychic Warrior PrCs. I assume you've all seen the revised PrCs at www.montecook.com/arch_stuff14.html? The soulknife and slayer are now viable psychic warrior PrCs. There's also the Mindknight and Andon Scott's revised Truth Seeker (gain psychic warrior manifester levels every level (only for Clairsentience and Telepathy, though) instead of the weird know only low-level powers scheme). The Mindknight and Truth Seeker are found at the Mind's Eye.

Total: 6 PrCs for psychic warriors at the end of the month.

I liked the original slayer better. If you continue the PW power pt progression you have far far less PP than the original way. You have more powers known but you don't have the variety of having psion and PW powers. Psions have the only healing powers.

Yeah, while there were some issues with the PsiHB prestige classes, changing the Slayer to the "+1 level of existing class" scheme is just a solution in search of a problem.
