Yes, indeed there is.

Personally, I'm all in favor of Earth Elementals looking cool. Suppose one is summoned on a cobble street. Now most of the elemental will be composed of the dirt under the cobble street, but the cobbles themselves could be arranged on the elemental to form a sort of "cobblestone armor" that looks like a breastplate or full plate.

Give them a bit tougher AC.
