Miniatures painted by my wife!

Check out the minis my wife Emily painted for two characters from our group. The one on the left is our friend Marek's character, Ku-Gorach, a giant samurai. The one on the right is Thzula Swift Hawk, an orc totem warrior and Emily's character.

I paint a little, too, but Em's stuff universally kicks my butt. She's really good.

Pretty cool! I like the highlighting and shading on the samurai's armor & the skintone of the orc. I might recommend a little matte sealant, maybe it's the picture, but the samurai looks a little too glossy.

Thanks! We haven't used sealant before. Can you explain what it does, exactly?

It's doesn't come across quite as good in the pic as it does in person, but my favorite part of these minis is how she did the orc's cloak feathers. Each one really stands out!

Grab some testors Master Flatte Spray and some Testors gloss. Give your models one shot of the gloss and then cover that after it dries with two or three covers of matte. This will give it a nice protective finish that looks more natural. If your figure starts to shine a bit, you know the matte has worn off and you need to recoat it.

Your wife did a nice job. My wife used to do some nice painting, but now she says she does not have the time. Something about our three kids...

Thanks everyone! I'll pass along the compliments. Next time I'm at the hobby store, I'll check out the gloss, etc. A protective finish would be nice, since we are actually handling these at gaming sessions after all.

And as for kids, we're not there just yet (married in July), but I can easily imagine that'd cut into painting (and everything else) time. :)

I really like the muscules paint job on the orc.. however I think that the choice of colour for the feather cloak needs to be reconsidered. Actually.. I would say that the painting style is good, but over all on the orc minature the choice of colours detracts. (I mean this as a positive hint.. the painting is good).

For example the over colour of the mini is the same.. there is no use of colour to draw attention to particular aspects. I think it's because there is no darkness.
