Hey all. I'm pretty sure that I will run/describe minions in the same manner that I run/describe all of the other creatures in the area which are not obvious leaders. For example, if the encounter consists of a hobgoblin warcaster, 2 hobgoblin soldiers, 1 hobgoblin archer, and 3 hobgoblin minions (whatever they may be) 2 of those minions might resemble that archer and the remaining one might resemble that soldier. This includes all gear, tactics, and demeanor. At the time the pcs interact with them ill' choose which one was the real one and which was the minion depending on what would be the most fun for the encounter or which would be the most epic for the scene. If the pcs fighter were to get the drop on this group and the fighter was able to charge in and do some decent surprise round damage then it wouldn't be too cinematic if the hobgoblin turned around and clobbered him because he charged the real monster and not the minion. Id rather see that first strike cleave the poor hobs armor asunder and send his flailing body into the nearby fire pit while the real soldiers get their senses together and retaliate. Same goes with wasting daily and encounter powers. If I feel the pc would be upset if his brute strike was used to annihilate a minion then I would make sure this wasn't the case. ;) This is how Iv ran most of my recent 3.5 games and I don't feel as if my personal group would feel cheated in anyway by me not blatantly stating who was and was not a minion. In fact I think they would feel cheated if I did.
