Mirror Image + Whirlwind Attack

If a person is fighting an opponent under the effects of a Mirror Image spell, can he use a Whirlwind Attack to strike at each image?

If not, why not?

If so, what sort of implications does this have? Would said person then be able to Cleave if he destroys an image?

Assuming all the images are within striking distance I see no problem with it.

No, taking out an image does not trigger the cleave feat.
