Howse this:Your character's grandfather (paternal/maternal he decides), helped a defeat a mighty demon lord from invading his lands. In an act of spite the demon lord tried to curse his grandfather, but the magic was affected by a powerful magic item that his grandfather wielded, protecting him from some of the effect. What happened is now he's cursed (and all his line) to have this silverly sheen for skin. (The demon was trying to trap soul him in a mirror). So now he's marked for all time. While it wasn't the most comfortable life, his grandfather managed to life a reasonable normal life. For now, the curse seems to be permanent and non-harmful....perhaps.</blockquote>
