Misdirection?

We ran into some trouble with this today when it was cast for the first time. How does it work in relation to see invisibility?

The wizard in question was going to cast it on a rock. What happens if the wizard then moves on, leaving the rock behind. Does that matter? Would, say, detect magic work at all since the rock isn't present (even if the rock was magical to begin with)?

The spell is designed to create the illusion that the caster assumes the "mannerism" of the targeted object/creature.

The presence of the rock is no longer needed, if it was within range when the spell was cast. After that it doesn't need to be in range.

See Invisibility wouldn't affect things in any way. That spell has nothing to do with detecting alignment, magic, whether someone is lying or not, or similar divination spells that target "auras" to detect stuff. Note that if someone cast Detect Thoughts, while this spell was in effect, then the caster would seem to be thinking like a rock, which is to say none at all.

If the rock was magical in the first place then the caster would register as "magical" if someone cast a Detect Magic spell and observed him.
