Mixing d20's...

Ralts Bloodthorne

First Post
Recently I got my hands on Unearthed Arcana and went through it.

I also owned Modern d20 and a Pre-Release of Future d20.

One thing in particular struck me in Unearthed Arcana that should definately be ported over to Modern and Future d20...

Complex Skill Checks make a load of sense in both M&F d20 as does Complex Skill Use

The "Injury" variant for those of you that do not feel HP are really the way to go.

Finally, the Test Based Prerequisites for PrC's in Modern and Future make a lot of sense.

If you have the opportunity, taking a look at those options may be worth your while. My Future d20 players really like the Complex Skill Checks and Use, as well as enjoy the Test Based PrC system for Modern.

I believe that is the idea behind the ever-evolving, ever-networking d20 System. You can port rules back and forth, almost seamlessly.

I encourage d20 Modern and d20 Future publishers to consider Unearthed Arcana as one of your many sources of OGC, especially if you have been waiting to use stuff like, VP/WP, armor as DR, etc.

If you can get me permissions to use the above listed stuff...

I'd be more than happy too!

As further explaination behind this somewhat "Well, DUH!" post is the fact that as soon as you start mentioning using Modern d20 rules in a campaign setting such a Ebberon or Forgotten Realms, people absolutely lose thier minds.

It's like a volcano will erupt under thier feet if you DARE arm the "Disciples of Bhaal" with SMG's and wearing tactical armor while guarding the temple in Undermountain, or detail a battle between Thayian and Rathamen Armor Divisions on the steppes of Thay.

Not only should people go back to interchanging the rules, but perhaps interchanging settings and rules might break some people out of thier funks and thier "been there, done that" dulldrums.

Just food for thought.

Permission to use VP/WP and armor as DR? Armor as DR is on p. 111 of AU and VP/WP is on p. 115. As neither of these are in the PI declaration, nor are they called out in the OGC declaration as 'not OGC', it would appear, to me, that permission is granted.

It's a Wizards product.
It's not OGC until it appears in the (M)SRD

They don't have to declare anything.

It's thier ball, thier field, thier league.

Unearthed Arcana is 99% OGC, it contains the license on page 222 (Their PI declaration is on the credits page). Because it uses OGC from sources other than WoTC they have to go that way (Injury, for example, is from Mutants and Masterminds).

From the Content Page
Open Content: Except for material designated as Product Identity (see above) and the Githyanki/githerzai, slaad and yuan-ti bloodlines in Chapter 1, the contents of this WIZARDS OF THE COAST(r) game product are Open Game Content, as defined in the Open Gaming License version 1.0a Section 1(d). No portion of this work other than the material designated as Open Gaming Content may be reproduced in any form without written permission

Me, I have been thinking about a basic game using; Generic Classes, Injury, Bell Curve Rolls and Level-Independent XP Awards, maybe Armor and DR.

Yep. That's what it said on my copy of Unearthed Arcana (UA), not to confuse with Urban Arcana (UA).

[Yes, it annoys me that people put it backward ... Arcana Unearthed (AU) is a Malhavoc/Monte Cook product. :p ]

The crazy thing is, I had my copy of Unearthed Arcana in front of me, and I still fat-fingered it as AU. Oop!

This product unlike thier other products has been released under the OGL. Their PI and OGC declarations can be found on the credit page in the very front of the book and the license is in the back of the book. The OGC declaration makes just about everything OGC except for the stuff specifically listed.

On another note...has anyone heard when Andy will be putting d20 Future stuff in the MSRD and how much of it will go in?
