There's more than the math, but the 'more' was really arrived at incrementally. They had to publish MM1, see what worked and what didn't, then publish MM2 and try some fixes, which didn't all work, and then redo the stat block and make further tweaks to produce a fairly uniformly good set of MM3 monsters. MV then rehashed SOME older monsters to produce what are usually better versions. Still, I like some of the old ones! Also they never even came close to covering all the basic monsters. Dragon/Dungeon/etc. managed to catch some more, but there are still huge gaps in what is on Compendium.</blockquote>
