MMIV errors

Please contribute any errors you’ve found in MM IV. Correct me if I made a mistake.

There are several creatures that I haven’t proofread yet (, especially the old monsters with class levels).

(PS: Please keep this thread free of complaints about design decisions.)
(PS2: Don’t mistake this thread as anti-MMIV propaganda. MMIV actually seems to have a lower error-per-creature-ratio than the previous Monster Manuals.)

Errors:

• p.10: Cyclonic Ravager: The defense information includes the line:
miss chance 50% (invisibility). The creature entry lacks further information regarding the nature of this invisibility.
Is it “natural” like the invisible stalker’s (not subject to invisibility purge)? Is it spell-like or supernatural? Does it require an action to activate? The creature’s description describes a visible opponent.

• p.15: Balhannoth: Its Senses are: blind, dweomersight 120 ft., and listen +6.
Dweomersight works like blindsense.
Since it only has blindsense, not blindsight, the balhannoth can only discern the location of other creatures. Opponents still have full concealment from the balhannoth. That means that the balhannoth has a 50% miss chance when attacking other creatures.
The balhannoth is also denied its Dex modifier to AC against creatures it cannot see. Thus its AC would be: AC 18, touch 9, flat-footed 18.

Errata suggestion: Change the blindsense in the dweomersight to blindsense.

• p.34: Concordant Killer: Average hit points should be 199 hp instead of 200 (19x4.5 + 19x6 = 199.5, round down to 199).
The feat Quicken Spell-like Ability (greater dispel magic) requires CL 20. The Concordant Killer only has a caster level of 19 for its spell-like abilities, so it shouldn’t be able to use this feat.
Survival +6 (+9 on other planes) should be Survival +6 (+8 on other planes). Non-epic synergy bonuses give a +2 modifier.

• p.40: Death Drinker: Not really an error, but there is no reason why the death drinker would want to wield its longsword one-handed. When wielding the sword two-handed it deals (3d6+18/17-20) damage.

• p.52: Dwarf Ancestor: Jump modifier should be Jump +8 (8 ranks, -6 speed, +6 Str)

• p.83: Dark Talon Soldier: Melee mwk maquahitl +5 (1d10+4/x3). The maquahitl has its own section where it is introduced as a new exotic weapon. There its threat range is /x2, so one of the two entries is wrong.

• p.98: Mageripper Swarm: Its Senses are: blind, blindsense 30 ft., sense magic 30ft. and listen +12.
Since it only has blindsense, not blindsight, the mageripper swarm can only discern the location of other creatures. Opponents still have full concealment from the mageripper swarm.
The mageripper swarm is denied its Dex modifier to AC against creatures it cannot see. Thus its AC would be: AC 14, touch 14, flat-footed 14.

Errata suggestion: Change blindsense 30 ft. to blindsight 30 ft..

• p.100: Minotaur, Greathorn: has Melee greathammer +17/+12/+7 (3d6+10/x4). The greathammer has its own section where it is introduced as a new exotic weapon. There its threat range is 19-20/x4, so one of the two entries is wrong.

Last i checked, there were not supposed to be 19-20/x4 crit weapons. Period.
Suggested errata: Use the threat range given in the attack line (20/x4) for the greathammer.

• p.156 & p.162:Whitespawn Hordeling & Whitespawn Iceskidder :

The whitespawn hordeling has a listed speed of 40ft, fly 20ft (clumsy), but no wings. The whitespawn iceskidder has a listed speed of 40ft and does have wings. The two speed listings should probably be switched.

• p.192: Voor: Its Senses are: blind, blindsense 120 ft., and listen +11.
Since it only has blindsense, not blindsight, the voor can only discern the location of other creatures. Opponents still have full concealment from the voor. That means that the voor has a 50% miss chance when attacking other creatures.
The voor is also denied its Dex modifier to AC against creatures it cannot see. Thus its AC would be: AC 15, touch 9, flat-footed 15.

Errata suggestion: Change blindsense 30 ft. to blindsight 30 ft..

• P.192: dreadful lasher: Ac would be AC 19, touch 8, flat-footed 19 (see voor).

Errata suggestion: Change blindsense 30 ft. to blindsight 30 ft..

• P.197:Zern Arcanovore: Should have 13 skill points ((10[HD]+3)x1 [2+int,minimum 1]=13). Concentration +5 (3ranks, +2 Con), Hide +7 (+3 Dex, +4 Size), Listen +0 (+0 Wis), Spellcraft +4 (6 ranks, -2 Int), Spot +0 (+0 Wis). 9 ranks. It lacks 4 skill points.

• Several creatures (among them are the demonhive, plague walker, and zern bladethrall) don't have a Typical Treasure listing.
This is not really an error since the description of the typical treasure entries (p. 6) says that they can be omitted if the creature has no treasure, or if the Possessions stat block line is enough to express in their treasure.
But on the other hand some creatures have typical treasure entries telling you the monster has no treasure, while others simply omit the treasure listing. That's inconsistent design.

I think the real error in those stat-blocks is confusing blindsense with blindsight, as it seems to be the assumption of the designers that they can all get around by non-visual means just fine. Switching out the -sense for the -sight makes balhannoths, magerippers and vooroloths much more convenient to run.

Demiurge out.

I agree. The designers obviously confused blindsense and blindsight. The AC-error part was not ment as an errata. It was to illustrate whats wrong with switching blindsight and blindsense.

I guess I'd better add your suggested errata to those entries.

THe MMIV introduction states on page 6, that
Some creatures don't have treasure. Others have their treasure merely expressed in their Possessions stat block line. This section of the description (the Typical Treasure listing)is where you find more information if it applies.

So the missing treasure listings are no mistakes.

Other creatures in MMIV and other books that use this format that don't have treasure have a Treasure Listing saying that they don't usually have treasure.

You're right. The book is completely inconsistent in how it treats treasures (,or the lack of them).

Do you have a list of the monsters lacking treasure entries??

The zern bladethrall doesn't have a typical treasure listing but does have a "Possesions" line. The demonhive and plague walker don't have any Treasure listing at all.

As an aside, the new monsters (except dragons, which still use the old format) in Dragons of Faerun don't have a Typical Treasure entry, but some of them have a "Possesions" line.

Greathorn Hammer.
Last i checked, there were not supposed to be 19-20/x4 crit weapons. Period.

1d12 x4 crit is much saner for a 2 handed exotic weapon. Maybe make it 2d6 rather than the 1d12.

The whitespawn hordeling has a listed speed of 40ft, fly 20ft (clumsy), but no wings. The whitespawn iceskidder has a listed speed of 40ft and does have wings. The two speed listings should probably be switched.
