Modern Advances: Hardcore Activist review Modern Advances: Hardcore Activist By Steve Miller Publisher: Interactive Design Adventures, LLC Modern Advances: Hardcore Activist is an 8 page pdf focusing exclusively on the Hardcore Activist prestige class along with a custom skill, a few feats, and an example NPC. Short, concise and professional, I think it accomplishes exactly what it wants to in as small a space as possible. If, for your d20 Modern game, you need to stat out your vegan hippie girlfriend or an anti-abortion activist, this class is for you. I personally don't see myself playing a character like this myself, but it may be for you. The cover features a photograph of a model portraying the example NPC, Lee Corrigan, a member of Shaved Lesbians Against Guns and of the Second Amendment Rights Supporters. It immediately gets into the nuts and bolts of the prestige class, detailing a class designed for rabble rousing and influencing crowds of protestors. You get things like bonuses to diplomacy and intimidate skill checks in certain circumstances. You also get access to the oratory skill and the Champion feat. These allow you to influence the emotions of crowds and give you bonuses in defense of your chosen cause or creature. Finally, the writer stats out an example character using the prestige class, skill and feats that he’s given. The class abilities really focus on social skills, in particular the manipulation of large crowds of like-minded individuals. It is something like a bard in D&D, but of course, without the spells and singing and bardic lore. The class offers little in the way of combat skills besides bonuses when attacking opponents of your cause, but that’s not what the class is built for. If you need a leader for a group of right or left wing fanatic, or if you want to stat up your favorite talk radio personality, this prestige class is right up your alley. Normally, I wouldn’t be interested in such a prosaic prestige class as this, but this pdf is so well written and professional, I’m actually considering statting up and using a character like this as an NPC.
