MODERN-AWAKENINGS - Presenting the Gatekeeper Class and the Gateway Spells...

mroberon1972

First Post
Work is progressing nicely, though not as fast as I might have hoped. Regardless, I have compiled a part of the Modern Awakenings setting and designed the layout that I am publishing the book with.

As a gift to those who enjoy new spells and classes for D&D, I have compiled the rules for both Gatekeepers and Gateway spells. In addition, I have taken two pages of background information and added it in for you to get an idea of how the book will "Taste".

The Gatekeeper is a character "Template" class. Template classes are different from normal prestige classes in that each level of the class has prerequisite abilities. In order to achieve 5th level as a Gatekeeper, for instance, your character must already have access to 5th level arcane spells. These classes are meant to spice up your character, rather than define it.

So, without further ado, I present Gateway Magic. If you like it or have any questions, please come by my forums (registration required) and let me know. Lately, they have been looking pretty lonely...

You can download the 6 page PDF at the home page of my site:

I downloaded the file and took a look around your message boards - Creation and Ancient Awakenings/Modern Awakenings is a really clever and imaginative concept. Nice work :)

Some d20 System License/OGL observations:

1. I don't know if it's intentional or an artifact of the PDF creation process you used, but the d20 Logo is altered - border areas that are supposed to be black are a light gray in the PDF - and alteration of the logo isn't allowed if you use the d20 System License (see in here, the d20 System Guide under "d20 System Trademark Logo Usage Requirements"):

http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/d20guide.rtf

2. Your cover should say "Requires the use of the Dungeons & Dragons(R) Player's Handbook, Third Edition, published by Wizards of the Coast, Inc." See the link above again, under Mandatory Trademark Use. There are also other ways of phrasing that which you can choose from in there that you might find more applicable. (EDIT: Oops - my point being, WotC requires you to use one of their phrases, and your phrase on the cover differs slightly from the requirements.)

3. You also need to include this text somewhere in the document: "Dungeons & Dragons(R) and Wizards of the Coast(R) are registered trademarks of Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc., and are used with permission." Again, see the above link under Mandatory Trademark Use. Again, there are other ways of phrasing that which might be more applicable to choose from.

4. OGL - you are using version 1.0 of the Open Game License, which is techically okay, but you might want to upgrade to version 1.0a, and include the Section 15 copyright notice from there:

http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/OGLv1.0a.rtf

If you are using the SRD and/or the Modern SRD, you need to include the following in Section 15 as well:

System Reference Document Copyright 2000, Wizards of the Coast, Inc.; Authors Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, based on original material by E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.

Modern System Reference Document Copyright 2002, Wizards of the Coast, Inc.; Authors Bill Slavicsek, Jeff Grubb, Rich Redman, Charles Ryan, based on material by Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, Richard Baker, Peter Adkison, Bruce R. Cordell, John Tynes, Andy Collins, and JD Wiker.

Hope this is helpful - I'm not a lawyer or anything, but I recently went through everything related to the d20 System License/OGL License for my own Web site and a d20 Modern sourcebook I'm working on.

Anyhow, thanks for the great read, and I'm looking forward to seeing more :)

Best,

Thanks for the info, I'm slowly getting there on the design scale of things...

As to you comment:

1. Nope, no alterations. That fule is as it came from thier own file: D20_logo_CMYK.psd. Background is just greyfor some reason in that file. The others were either black and while or very poor resolution.

2. Could you show me where it says that? I've been running through the docs for about a week, and found nothing saying that. Now I wonder how much else I missed...

3. Makes sense.

4. Nope, look at it again. Says 1.0a at the top and got it from WotC site direct. If it's wrong in some way, then thier copy is wrong...

Thanks again...

"Hmnnnn..."

1. Hmmm. Sounds like some kind of software compatibility issue type thingy causing the color to change to gray then - the gray areas of that file are black on my computer (I just downloaded it fresh to make sure). I don't know enough about graphic files and formats and imaging software to be of much help though. Maybe someone on the En World art gallery forum can help you.

2. It's under the bolded header Manditory Trademark Use (p. 11 of the RTF file) - make sure you have the latest version of this file because WotC recently updated it to include d20 Modern (and added new restrictions as well).

4. Yep - my bad. I'd still change your reference in Section 15 to the SRD with WotC's latest version of it though:

System Reference Document Copyright 2000, Wizards of the Coast, Inc.; Authors Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, based on original material by E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.

and/or

Modern System Reference Document Copyright 2002, Wizards of the Coast, Inc.; Authors Bill Slavicsek, Jeff Grubb, Rich Redman, Charles Ryan, based on material by Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, Richard Baker, Peter Adkison, Bruce R. Cordell, John Tynes, Andy Collins, and JD Wiker.
