Moment of Prescience & Contact Outer Plane

Quick question: would it be possible to use a Moment of Prescience spell to avoid the ill-effects of a failed Intelligence check when casting Contact Other Plane?

By the RAW, I'm thinking not, since according to the spell description, Moment of Prescience only gives its bonus to opposed ability or skill checks. Although the DC for Contact Other Plane does vary according to who you want to contact, the ability check is not explicitly described as an opposed check.

I hope I'm wrong though. Would be a nice way to combine two spells.

EDIT: Just thought of another possibility. Greater Herosim gives a decent bonus of +4 to skill checks. But once again, going by the RAW, that wouldn't help for Contact Other Plane, since that spell requires an ability check! Grrr!

Thank you. Looks like the only wizard spells that give you an edge on that pesky Int check are Fox's Cunning and Limited Wish or Wish. At the very least, Limited Wish could be used to get a +2 bonus on the check by mimicking the 3rd level Bard spell Good Hope. But I would say that a larger bonus to a single check would be reasonable, given the power of the spell.

Well, from the rules on ability checks: "Essentially, you’re making an untrained skill check." This sentence is not repeated in the definition of ability check, however, so you'll need to have a lenient DM to allow it. This is especially true since in most cases the rules (other spells like bestow curse) actually differentiate between the two.

Ah... you haven't heard about the trick with Share Spells and a familiar, then? :)

Too bad my familiar is a lying sack of poop and I can't even trust him to wake me up if my bedroll catches on fire while camping. "Get a quasit" I thought. "It'll be cool to have a nasty familiar!"
