Hi guys,
The second issue of Mongoose Publishing's new magazine, Signs & Portents, has just dropped on to my desk and, I have to say, it looks even better than the first!
The front cover sports a delicious picture of Claudia Christian, AKA Lieutenant Commander Susan Ivanova, in full Babylon 5 regalia. A better cover we could not have wished for! However, there are plenty more juicy articles inside;
Armageddon 2089 Q&A - the most commonly asked questions for this game have been addressed, with official answers from our very own Rulesmasters.
Tales from Mongoose Hall - want to see what the Mongoose Crew do in their spare time? Watch as we heroically attempt the Fiery Trial story arc from Babylon 5!
The Quintessential Mongoose - a not so serious look at rules handling the Mongoose race, class and a whole range of feats, spells and magical items. . .
The Bloody Grimoire - an all new set of rules expanding Encyclopaedia Arcane: Blood Magic, including the Blood Magus character concept, the Blood Patriarch prestige class and rules for integrating Blood Magic into the Slaine RPG (very fitting!). All written by the book's designer, Ian Sturrock.
Why I Hate Monks - Jonny Nexus gives us another left field rant.
How Good is Lawful Good? - an article that takes a magnifying glass to the one alignment players love to avoid, illustrating how being Lawful Good does not necessarily mean you are a nice person. . .
Datafile 2089: The Marshal - an all new Advanced Comms/Assault WarMek from Moore Ltd.
Handling the Lady - written by the Lizard, this article demonstrates how you can include Susan Ivanova into your games of Babylon 5 without ruining the entire story arc. Also includes a sneak peek of her game stats and biography from the year 2259.
Battling Dragons - an old subject but a goodie. Your players romping through too many dragons? Learn how to make them born again hard.
Hot on the Streets - a new selection of equipment for perp characters in Judge Dredd, along with the Justice Department's not so glowing analysis of them. . .
Ultimate Gameplay: Cooking for Mayhem and Profit - an oddball this article but one likely to gain use next time your party is attacked around the campfire. A selection of new ideas for using cooking pots and culinary skills in battle. I kid you not.
The Coming of Conan - continuing our long running preview of the Conan RPG due in 2004, this one is bound to be popular. Here we detail the Barbarian class, the foundation for Conan himself. Remember, these Conan articles are development notes in process, so we welcome any comments you have on the new rules.
Ambush - quite proud of this one, Ambush is our first battle report (readers of a certain other British gaming magazine will be very familiar with the concept). This time around, we look at a stand up fight in Armageddon 2089, as well as give new rules for Mek modification.
Character Concepts - too long has the noble half-orc been ignored by games designers! Here we provide three character concepts for half-orc characters to flesh them out during character creation.
The Fiery Trial - designer Bruce Graw gives us an inside look into how he created the Fiery Trial story arc, and why. . .
White Queen's Gambit - written by Dragon writer Johnathan Richards, this scenario for fantasy-based d20 games will require a great deal of brainpower on the part of the players to make their way to success. Counts the Mongoose Crew out then. . .
Subscribers to issue 2 of Signs & Portents should be getting their copies through the post within the next few days. It will appear in your local stores, priced $5.95, at the start of September.
