Hi guys, This is one Quintessential we have been dogged after for over a year - the Quintessential Chaos Mage, written by Patrick Younts, will be out this week! In a nutshell, The Quintessential Chaos Mage takes the hit-seller Encyclopaedia Arcane: Chaos Magic and completely revitalises it, as well as giving more options to Chaos Mage characters. We have tweaked the bits you didn't like, and added a whole lot of new things you will love! The book kicks off with the Chaos Mage character class, a revised version of that which appeared in the Chaos Magic book, though there is plenty here that will seem familiar - bringing your old Chaos Mage characters up to date (and to 3.5 to boot!) will be no problem. We then go into the traditional Quintessential format for the Chaos Mage - first off, adding some Character Concepts that will ensure that even the highly changeable practitioners of Chaos will never be the same. You can now choose from the Breaker, the Maker, the Master, the Sculptor, the Traveller, the Wildling. Guidelines are given for non-human Chaos Mages and the directions they tend to take, as well as a dwarf-only concept, the Living Forge. Prestige Classes ensure that once you enter the path of the Chaos Mage, you need never deviate from it (to be fair, where would you go?). Here, there are choices of the Bloodcarver, Chaotic Fist, Chaotic Specialist, Doomringer, Fractured Jester, Lord of Change, and Twisted King. Chaos Feats lists some changes to existing feats for Chaos Mage, plus some ideas on feats to keep an eye on as you travel the road of Chaos (Great Fortitude will start looking very attractive, I promise!). There are also three pages of new feats designed specifically for Chaos Mages. The Paths of Chaos have always been a popular consequence of Chaos Magic - once you suffer a backlash from casting spells on the fly, forever will it dominate your destiny! Many new paths have been added and old ones adjusted. But all are highly undesirable once you get to the furthest depths! The Chaos Sorcery chapter is the main rules section of this book, teaching all you need to know on how to use Chaos Magic. Once again, things have been streamlined, allowing you to concentrate more on adventuring and less on how to construct the next spell you need. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Chaos Magic, the basic process is that you 'build' a spell any time you need it. Chaos Mages are not bound by 'standard' spells and can create almost any effects they like on the fly. There are, however, restrictions on what they can and cannot do (Chaos Mages have the ultimate flexibility but are also profoundly limited in some areas) and backlashes of uncontrolled Chaos energy can have some very unpleasant side effects on the practitioner. For example, Chaos Mages are completely unable to perform summonings, divinations or heal anything. However, you can construct spells to perform almost any other action, to one degree or another. If you see him at a convention, ask Studio Manager Ian Barstow about his Gnome Bomb. . . In this version of Chaos Magic, we have also listed many, many, many example spells, allowing you to leap into casting straight away. Chaos Familiars give these mages an altogether unworldly companion, whereas Tools of the Trade details on how they create their own very unique Chaos Magic Items. More mundane materials, such as the Salve of Corruption's Ease will also be highly popular in the Chaotic Fraternity. . . Tricks of the Trade gives some ideas on how old skills can be used by a Chaos Mage - and there is a great section on Chaos Mage Duels. You do not want to be around when two of these guys starts hurling magical power! The book winds up with a complete index, a character sheet and a very comprehensive summary sheet that will save you paging through the book in the middle of combat to build a spell. The Quintessential Chaos Mage is priced at $21.95 and will be available in your local games store (and all good bookshops!) this coming week.
