Hi guys, The Quintessential Halfling, the complete companion to all things short, is currently on its way to the distributors and will be finding its way to your local stores next week. Written by new Mongoose Staff Writer, Gareth Hanrahan, this 128 page tome is jam-packed with options and new approaches for halfling characters. Character Concepts provide a bunch of ready-made templates to personalise your halfling right from character creation. These include the Aristocrat, Black Sheep, Burglar, Clan Cleric, Collector, Avenger, Sidekick, Sniper, and Wanderer, among many others. Halfling characters can be specialised and expanded further through The Prestige Halfling, providing a number of solid archetypes to aim for - the Clan Defender, Clan Matriarch, Darkfinder, Dungeon Scout, Enclosure Druid, Halfling Allfriend, Grenadier, Headhunter, Knight of the Road, Master Chef, Master of Hounds, Second-Storey Thief, Spell Completist, and Wild Card. Tricks of the Halflings kicks off with new uses for old skills - using Appraise to find work in a new town, for example, utilising Gather Information for gossip. There are a few animal tricks specific to halflings and, of course, we could not have a Tricks chapter for halflings without covering cookery. Added to this, there are a few halfling combat tactics (pesky harry, for example) and rules for attacking larger creatures by swarming all over them. Halfling Feats provides a few new directions for these characters - Absurdly Lucky, for example, or Kneebane, while Tools of the Halflings will allow them to seriosuly tool up with something appropriate for their diminished stature. Here, halfling citizens can now be armed with slingscones (does what it says on the tin), bladed kites, lots of different grenades, halfling plate armour (for the show-offs), cookery kits, gossamer weavings and a large selection of riding dogs. The next chapter, Halfling Subraces, takes a look at the different outlooks and physiology of the small folk, allowing players to take on the role of more than just a 'standard' halfling. These include to the Settled, Travellers, Fey Halflings, Pygmies, Shadeling, Stoneborn, Twistborn, and Waterborn. Halfling Magic introduces a new magical concept, that of Boons - minor tricks and bonuses that any halfling spellcaster can use in place of 0-level spells. Tied into skill use, a halfling may now be able to silence his armour, dry wet clothes instantly or discern echoes, among many others. Nothing that will blast your enemies into their component pieces, you understand, but it gives halfling socities an atmosphere all of their own. The Halfling Pantheon gives some generic deities ready for insertion into campaigns (who says there is just one halfling deity, when the humans get loads, eh?). These are complemented by the Clan and Fate domains, useable by halflings. Secrets of the Halflings opens the race right up, giving them a depth rarely touched upon in games. Ever wondered what the halflings call themselves? It is not 'halfling'. Players can engage in fortune-telling exercises, such as Six Stones Casting or Nightflame, and the rules for guilds from the Quintessential Rogue are expanded for the halflings' unique use. Clan and Family will give any halfling an instant background, and Games Masters will find it ready to use to create their own settlements of small folk. Finally, Halfling Structures covers the buildings of halflings and the modes of travel their wandering folk use, from the humble caravan to the immense (to them) landships. The Quintessential Halfling is priced at $21.95 and will be available in your local store next week.
