Hi guys,

The last of the books available this coming week from Mongoose Publishing (including EA Abjuration, The Quintessential Human and the Mongoose Pocket Player's Handbook) is Ultimate Monsters, compiled by Richard Neale.

A 256 page hardback set to take its place among the other Supplementary Rulebooks from Mongoose Publishing, Ultimate Monsters, like its predecessors, takes the very best of OGC material and compiles it in one place. Just scanning down the rather lengthy section 15 provides such names as EN World Publishing, AEG and Green Ronin.

I won't go through this book page by page - there are over 230 monsters in this tome! However, Ultimate Monsters also includes a chapter on how to best use the creatures within its pages, an article from August Hahn on how to best use monsters in a campaign (rather than just pulling the monster of the week out at random), and a complete listing of all monsters in the book, arranged by their Challenge Rating.

Ultimate Monsters is a 256 page hardback priced at $34.95, and will be available in your local store from the middle of this coming week.

Latest News From the Mongoose Warehouse: EA Sovereign Magic (a perfect companion to Strongholds & Dynasties), the Slayer's Guide to Titans and the latest Slaine RPG book, The Finians, have just arrived at our warehouse and will be making their way to distributors this coming week - they'll be popping up in your local store sometime the week after.

One thing I've always wished monster books would do is after the expanded stat block, the abbreviated one at the bottom of the monster entry and before the description and combat stats. Any chance of something like that here?

Does it take monsters from just OGL sources or does it include SRD material?

Are all the creatures fully illustrated?

Is it similiar to the Monster Manual in style and apperance or more like Liber or other books that give at least a page per monster?

One thing that I liked about the Scarred Lands monster books were the mini-italicized paragraphs that were applicable to the setting. Obviously this book is not for a specific setting, but wouldn’t an "in character" snippet would be really cool?

FYI -- I agree that illustrations are critical. But even so, I am sure I'll end up buying it anyway. 
