Monk and PrC

A Monk who levels in a non-Monk class may no longer gain levels in the Monk class.

This applies whether the class is a PC class, NPC class, or Prestige Class.

However, certain Prestige Classes have the special feature that a Monk may multiclass freely back and forth. Examples: The Red Avenger and the Weapon Master from Sword and Fist.

Also, I believe in Forgotten Realms, there are certain combinations permitted - Halfling Clerics of a certain deity may multiclass freely with Monk, or something. I'm not big on FR.

Yes. Certain orders of Monks are allowed to multiclass with certain classes and prestige classes. For example, monks of Amn, god of spellcasting, can multiclass with the Wizard class (but not Sorcerer, and not any arcane spellcasting prestige classes); monks of the Long Death order (who follow any evil god of death) can multiclass freely with Fighter, Assassin, and Blackguard.

Also, Monks using the rules in Oriental Adventures can multiclass freely, period. The OA Monk has no multiclassing restrictions.

Sword and Fist, and Oriental Adventures, should be your first stops.

Also, check with your DM to find out which supplements he allows. None? WotC-classbooks only? Any WotC book? Any published book? Any Prestige Class you can find on someone's website somewhere?
