D&D 3E/3.5 Monks nerfed in 3.5?

I've been reading about the new 3.5 edition and noticed the new DR rules. Apparently magical weapons will no longer bypass most DR, but rather the weapon material. While this may be ok for fighters who can buy multipe weapons, this could really screw the Monk who has only a flat + from his Ki strike.

So my question is what is the poor monk supposed to do against enemies with DR?

They are changing the DR system.

What makes you think that the monk's Ki strike ability won't be changed as well?

Maybe because the only change I've heard of is that they get their ki strike sooner?

And yeah, I guess a monk can use monkish weapons. But some people prefer to fight unarmed. Why should they be punished for doing so?

I'm really starting to hate this new DR idea. I can just picture King Arthur coming up against the Pit Fiend. After swinging Excalibur to no avail, he murmers, "Damn. I knew I shouldn't have left my holy silver butterknife at home."

Some wizards like to cast fire spells. Do you feel that the existence of creatures with the Fire subtype "penalises them for doing so"?

And if Arthur was so wise, he'd have known to bring his Golf Bag.

Except you are forgetting that all DR values are being toned down as well. So after Arthur swings with Excalibur he will still hurt the Pit Fiend, just not as much as he would have with his holysilver butterknife ;)

Naturally the Monk's Ki Strike ability has been changed in 3.5e to accomodate:

L4: Magic
L10: Alignment (Lawful)
L16: Adamantine

Unless adamantite penetrates everything the monk is still screwed. He was screwed in 3e anyways without the some magic anyhow, he's just as screwed now.

Remember, DR levels are being decreased as well. So an inability to penetrate a given creature's DR is, while inconvenient, no longer entirely crippling.

Also, it appears that the monk's power level overall, as well as her flexibility in power selection, is being increased. In any case, I'll wait until I see the whole of the system before leaping to judgment. Frankly, though, just getting the 'magic' Ki Strike at 4th instead of 10th (!!!) looks like a huge improvement to me.
