Monster ability adjustments

Anyone else try to get Monster Ability Adjustments from their entries in the monster manuals? I have seen an official suggestion as to "subtract 10 from all the even scores" and "subtract 11 from all the odd ones"... doing this to the Bladeling from Monster Manual II gives me +2 Dex only. Shouldn't it try and balance out, or is this method a hit or miss?

Very few monster races actually have balanced ability scores. The Bladeling probably does just have a +2 racial bonus to dex with no penalties to any other stats. It has a Level Adjustment of +2 which makes up for that (as well as its other abilities).

Yeah I believe they have spell-like abilities for starters...
