Monster Ability Compilation?

The DMG has a table that give you monster creation stats. All their defenses/hp/attacks/damage, based on role and such.

But one thing that wasn't there was a suggestion as to the capacity of some abilities.

Take for example the Ice Archons. They can make an area burst sized 1 to 4, depending on their choice. How powerful is that? Then there are abilities which add conditions; what's the potency of Slowed vs Weakened vs Blinded vs Knocked Prone, etc.

An interesting project might be going through the MM and making a list of all the monster abilities, then boiling them down to their core mechanics, as sort've a 'grab bag' for monster creation.

Want a skirmisher? Here are some common skirmisher powers:
Adjacent allies gain combat advantage (Wolf, hyena)
Shift when (An attack against you misses; an enemy within 2 squares shifts and makes an attackk; You Charge) (Goblin, grimlock, Bog Hag)
Mobile Attack: Move at half speed and make a basic attack at any point in that movement. You do not incur OAs (Goblin Warrior, Storm Gorgon).

In addition, it might be good to go through and possibly rank them by power. The medusa's slow petrification is much more hefty than the medusa male/venomgaze basilisk's poison-based gaze attack, and so on.

I think this would be very useful. It also lets you find very obscure powers, versus very frequent ones; many ranged attackers have 'If monster misses attack, it remains hidden'. However, the Shadar-Kai witch is one of the only monsters I've seen that removes Line of Sight from a target beyond 2 squares.

Another way a list like that might be useful is for magic item creation (I'm thinking DM-created). That's what I would use something like for a lot as well.

I would do it myself (love the idea, good call) but I wouldn't be the right person to assign values to them... could start though and then get feedback... hmmm.

Good to hear there's interest in this kinda thing. Cause as soon as I finish working on this batch of monsters (which I'll admit is more work than I anticipated), I hope to break out all of the cool abilities I did into a Monster Toolbox with suggestions, limitations, and design tips.

You're on your own for WotC's, but it'd definitely be cool to have such a thing :)

I'm still a a a bit nervous about what the OGL will say regarding the use of the monster creation rules in the DMG. Using them to create monsters that you publish: fine. But will it be legal to make a "monster generator" using role-based information such as HP / Attack / DMG ranges etc.

Be aware I want to do this just for DM ease. I'm not a publisher.

Well the damages are set based on the power... It mentions which damage to use based on what type of power it is.

I think you also have to remember some powers come from the monster's race. Like kobolds and their shiftiness... All of them have that regardless of class.

So if you're listing powers you might want to add a column for that too!
