Monster Tiles

Monster Tiles are heavy duty ceramic tiles designed to be used as gaming tokens (or counters as some call them) specifically in D20™ based RPG games like Wizards of the Coast's Dungeons and Dragons™. They can of course be used in any gaming venue that needs a monster represented on a small token though. The reason they are designed to work with the D20™ system is that each monster tile fits within the space (ie. 1 in. square = 5 ft. square) designated for that monster as defined in the book/source for the given monster. We strive to offer great art to represent those creatures which we all love to use in our games. In our first series, we targeted monsters from the WoTC's SRD - monsters that you would find in Wizards of the Coast's Monster Manual v3.5. Coming soon to series 1 will be great artwork for NPCs (Non-Player Characters), Character portraits, items to put in your dungeons, familiars, horses (that's right, mounts!), and of course.... more great monsters!

Its not often I review a product line all at once, but that is really the only way to handle these products. It has been interesting to see what companies do with the need for miniatures by the people who play d20. There are the full miniatures that nice and three dimensional but can be bulky and hard to transport. Then there are the paper tokens that are flat with good art but not that durable. Now there is something in between. Monster Tiles are flat like the tokens but durable made of heavy duty ceramic.

Right now there are not a lot of different tiles available. That is one of the few things that limit the product. Hopefully, they will have the selection grow to cover many other types of monsters and possible some even bigger ones. Right now there are twenty four different tiles that take up the usually square on a grid and two that are bigger and take up four squares. The art on them are good. They are done in a realistic manner and not cartoonish. I especially like the rust monster picture and the wraith the best. Other ones include: lizardfolk, zombie, bugbear, gnoll gargoyle and others.

The tiles are bought in packs of five normally, but the web site allows one to mix and match and that’s really nice so people can get the exact ones they want. They come in a nice small bag for easy transport. Storage of them will be easy, they are flat and maybe a quarter inch thick. They stack nicely and being square they fit together well.

The tiles are nice and durable. I am not sure just how durable as I do not want to push them so far as to break them, but I sropped them on floors and tossed them around on tables and gave a bag full of them a good shake and none of them cracked, chipped, or got damaged in any way. They are easier to transport then minis and will last longer then the paper tokens. They are not that expensive either and will make a nice addition to the options for tactical combat and exploration.
