Monstrous HD

Question

If a creature has monstrous HD and you want to play it as a PC, do you get to change the feats mentioned in the entry? Example : Astral deva is listed as having alertness, do you get to change that?

Oh, you and your Questions.... :p

The rules don't seem to say. However, since any PC version of a "monster" race is typially an unusual example of their kind, it seems reasonable to be able to choose different feats, just as you may choose different skills (your "class skills" are the same, though).

Yes, those are just suggestted feats for the monster. The DM also can replace those feats when they use said monsters, like when splat material is used in the game.

sure.

But you realize that being an Astral Deva means you are 20th level right?

12HD + LA 8...

Mike

Funningly enough im seriously considering playing one, although i do realise only having 12HD of HP is going to suck at 20th level, and you are going to die REALLY fast to spells.....its might just work.

Of course this isnt going to happen, 20th level campaigns dont exist......

Yes, except for bonus feats. Fortunately for you, none of the astral deva's feats are bonus feats.

If you wish to customize the creature with new feats, you can reassign its other feats, but not its bonus feats.

Be aware that this swings both ways - DMs can also alter the nonbonus feats of monsters so that the world isn't full of tons of creatures that all happened to take thte Alertness feat. :p

Many many many creatures have really nonoptimal feat choices. But changing them can give quite a boost.

Take the shadow for example: you could give it fly-by attack instead of alertness. That's a significant increase in the power of the creature, since it can simply come out of a wall, touch someone, and sink back in.

Heh, but then they might miss you coming...
