I'm interested in playing around again with some monstrous characters, but I was wondering what the current state of the art is for dealing with these beasties.
I am familiar with Level Adjustments and the various "monstrous classes" from Savage Species and the WotC website. But I don't have any of the recent splatbooks, and it sounds like WotC has moved away from the unsatisfactory monstrous classes and has been experimenting with other mechanics for monstrous characters, like substitution levels or alternate class features.
How do these two things work? Are they the same thing? If they aren't, which is the latest development?
