Mordenkainens mansion????

Well i just discovered something. This old fun spell is now a lvl 22 wizard Utility spell.

But i got to wonder. Why oh why isn't this a ritual. It totally fit the theme of rituals. it could be awesome as a party to decide. we dont wanna sleep in damn tent. we'll pay to have a friggin mansion to live in. and it would be awesome and cool. But what wizard would memorize this over spells like time-stop. Okay i admit i personally could do it out of sheer coolness but it would gimp me.

Soo i ask you guys. Why do you think it isn't a ritual and how could we make it a ritual.

I was even thinking about making some sort of range of rituals on different levels. (a shack, a small house, a mansion, a friggin castle).

Also because i really like the idea of summoning a place to live as a ritual. even in the heroic tier. It didn't even has to be extra dimensional it could just a small house where the guard could sit outside in a rocking chair and keep watch.

Well enough of my ranting. what do you guys think about this.

It's probably not a ritual because it comes off so quickly. Since the mansion comes up in a standard action, it makes a for a useful panic button and escape route: a losing party can quickly retrreat into the mansion to escape and rest.

Ritual versions could probably be quite a bit lower in level, since they don't have that feature. However, I think the availablity of safe rest magics was reduced deliberately, so players have less of a reason to rest all the time.

Yeah well im aware that it would take something like 10 minutes to cast so it wouldn't be usable as an escape method.

But then again i think its very weird to use magic to summon a huge mansion as a way to escape. that has to be able to be done faster.

I was thinking about making the first one at around lvl 5-8 range and let it be a little big better than a tent. thinking about something like a small cabin like you see in the woods. some beds a table and a fireplace.

Like Leomund's secure shelter of 3.x? I really liked that spell, I wish it had come up in play :( A ritual for it in 4e would be pretty cool though - it wouldn't be a panic escape button, because it's an actual physical building, but it beats the heck out of sleeping in a tent!

Thats precisely the spell i was thinking about making as a ritual. Because its in no way a powerfull spell or something that can be abused in any way. Its just cool. and the fact that even as a level 21 party who has just started on the journey to become a demigod. that are still confined to a tent in long journey where they cant teleport

I think it's an utility power because Rituals cost money. It would be quite expensive to use the Mansion as a regular sleeping place, but I think it is supposed to be one.

It's also a nice retreat option, and a Ritual wouldn't be helpful at that.
