This grows out of my earlier attempt to design a fighter power that did more damage but created extra risks for attackers. I want powers that feel like defender powers, not striker powers. Here's one that's Dexterity-oriented but might fit the bill. Swordsman's Gambit -- Fighter Attack 1 You make a swift and deadly lunge at your opponent, but leave your side exposed. At-Will <> Martial, Weapon Standard Action -- Melee weapon Target: One creature Attack: Strength vs. AC, with a power bonus to the attack roll equal to half your Dexterity modifier. Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier + Dexterity modifier damage. Increase damage to 2[W] + Strength modifier + Dexterity modifier at 21st level. Miss: You provoke an opportunity attack from your target. Note that it's hard to find a secondary ability score for fighters, since they can be so diverse--this one is more appropriate for blade users than axe or hammer ones. So here's another power for heavier weapon users--this one should be evocative of 3e's dwarven defender. The effect of both powers might mean that fighters can identify with particular weapons even more. Fortress Strike -- Fighter Attack 1 You take advantage of your firm positioning to put your all into a blow. At-Will <> Martial, Weapon Standard Action -- Melee weapon Target: One creature Attack: Strength vs. AC. Hit: 1[W] + Strength modifier damage. Increase damage to 2[W] + Strength modifier at 21st level. Special: If you have moved no more than one square since the end of your last turn, add your Constitution modifier to your damage roll.
