Why isn't there more phlogiston? Vecna did it! It hasn't been mentioned because it was not enough interesting and the space in the pages had to be saved for other things. Guardians of the Galaxy weren't one of the most popular franchises by Marvel, until the action-live movie. Lots of titles become famous after the first titles, in a right sequel, reboot or adaptation to the screen. Before the first Tim Burton's movie Batman was totally unknown by the no-geek people, at least in my land. Green Arrow was not famous untile the action-live TV show. If you ask a little chidren about the Teen Titans, they know it thanks the cartoon. Spelljammer was not one of main lines, but the fiction speculative has evolutioned a lot from the 90's, and today it is the perfect setting if you want to mix D&D with your favorite sci-fi franchises. Lots of forgotten IPs could be recycled to be adapted to Spelljammer. Its advantage is its creative freedom, and the continuity isn't too binding, allowing possible retcons if these were necessary. If Hasbro wants crossovers among D&D and other IPs, then Spelljammer would be the right fantasy space. Dinamyte comics published a steampunk version of Flash Gordon, among other characters, in the saga Legenderry. And Galactica 1880 also has got some touch of "Spelljammer".
