Man, I have arrived late. As luck would have it, it seems KDLadage is equally late (which is a shame, becasue he can mount a pretty stirring defense of the "Don't Fileshare" position). In any event. I fileshare (steal) because I have been so ill-treated by producers in the past, be they RPG Publishers (WotC's Sword and Fist is money of mine they did not deserve), Music Companies (Metallica's Load was not the Metallica I had come to love) or Software developers (I have lost count of the poorly tested crap in need of two dozen patches that has gone to market and onto my hard drive). I must agree with Harlequin: as a consumer, the business world has destroyed any faith I ever had in them. Shoddy goods are the new Baseline. Filesharing has allowed me to sample stuff that I may like to buy (I prefer CD's for listening in the car, but can't be bothered to "Make" them). If a band's material grabs me from listenig to MP3's, I buy their CD. [i}Defenders of the Faith was purchased solely because I could download it. After Sword and Fist I vowed to never buy another 3E classbook. Perusing it in PDF form, I found enough value to make it worth purchasing. So I guess what I'm saying is it allows me to preview things before I purchse them, sometimes that pays off for business (DotF), and sometimes it doesn't (White Wolf's Dirty Secrets of the Black Hand). I won't bother making comparisons to Test driving a car, as I think it's apples and oranges. Plus I don't care if anyone approves or not. The Laws that people are bandying about no longer protect me (the consumer) if they ever did. As such, I will pay about as much attention to them as they deserve. I still buy products that I think have merit. If Companies feel that they are being deprived of the ability to sell me their product sight unseen...well, I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it. Viva la Grokster.
