My newbie players (didnt know how to deal with green slime - lost an animal companion to it)

decided to scoop up (tried several things, finally had glass equipment made, Now they want to keep it and feed it, putting some in glass flasks to throw at adversaries.

was there ever an Ecology of the green slime... I seem to remember one, but cant recall where.

How long does it live?
before feeding on hapless adventurers - what does it eat? - is it a bug attractor? feeding on moths and other cave inhabitants, roaches, crickets, etc...
is the mass growth equal to that of what it eats?

Does anything eat it?

just some thoughts...

that it does grow matching the volume of what it eats.

I believe there was something more detailed about them on the 2ed book. Anyway, I believe it would die in cativity... They mostly feed on any kind of organic matter they find (fungus, bones, plants, piss, rats, insects, anything really) but mostly because they... slide around the soil they gather most of what they need there. I don't know if the thing would survive without such an abundant amount of organic matter.

And taking parts of it would definetly deal damage to the beast, what would eventually kill it...

how does it get on the ceiling? can it get back to the ceiling?

And taking parts of it would definetly deal damage to the beast, what would eventually kill it...

why? its a plant or plant like creature that increases its mass by consuming other organic matter, but only takes damage from heat right?

close, Cold, fire, (is specific not sure about heat), sunlight or remove disease all hurt or kill it. and I have to agree,, dont think breaking it up would hurt it.

Think it's like any organic living thing. It has a some kind of "brain" or cognitive/neural system, even if extremely primitive, and some other fundamental systems, like for diggestion.

I guess taking parts of it would eventually damage those micro-organs and primitive systems far enough that the sustenance of life would be impossible.

They feed, they die, they grow, they reproduce... They ARE living. Or at least I think so.

except it doesnt move. I guess (from lack of someone writing an ecology of) that they also develop and multiply by some sort of spore, or RNA. mmmm that just gave me a thought.. a good explaition of how they work could be a RNA acid producing virus. exists only to recreate itself (from the DMG) if not completely wiped out, it will come back. and eats anything but stone - (just so it doesn't completely take over any planet.

under its explanation: Dwarves... They have their own way sof burning it out of infested areas, methods that they say are thorough. " if you dont do it proper, the stuff comes right back", they claim.

I dont see anyting on reproduce, they increase mass solely by feeding, now it does suggest intelligence: ...when it detects movement (and possible food) below... but that is kinda a weak argument for other than plant or virus. I like the virus idea the best so far (had never thought of it before)

and may even write up an ecology of along those lines. would love to see what other ecology (published) writers think. anyone ever look any of them up?
