Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Elemental Motes)

Huh, whattaya know, that's two articles in as many weeks I've actually found interesting and engaging. What's going on?

One of the things I found interesting about the new Forgotten Realms was motes. I'm happy to finally see them get a bit of love. There's such a wealth of potential in the concept that I'm surprised it hasn't been delved to death yet.

I particularly like the idea of the dragon using a mote as it's base. Although, I would've gone with an ancient red wyrm and made it a molten mote with adjoining minor motes and a massive city of orcs and goblins that ride warwing drakes (elite units ride young red wyrms, children of the ancient mother, gifts to her best soldiers), and streets patrolled by beholder-kin as sentinels with the thieves' guild master being an old beholder that was cast out of the order. And a secret police, all gestapo-like, and made up mostly of illithid leaders and changeling spies; they have ways of making you think...

I liked the article. I never really thought about the other types of motes and how they could be used, so that was useful.

However, I also never considered the idea of motes having their own gravity, or motes spinning out of control, which gave me tons of ideas for encounters. I imagined not only spinning motes (perhaps triggered by something players or NPCs have done), but even motes rolling and the PCs having to keep moving to stay on top.
