Does a mount die at 0hp or can they go to their negative bloodied value like a PC? Please provide source and page reference if you have one.

the

rules compendium states that dm-controlled creatures or monsters just die at 0hp. It doesn't really specify anything else (relevant pages 252 and 261) AFAIK. But since the mount shares an action pool with the PC, even when dismounted, I believe this implies that the mount is always controlled by the PC (except when it's not, if the DM applies rule 0).

I would treat it as an NPC ally that will obey commands in general but when unmounted it definitely dies at 0hp. The cavalier mount article (Dragon 393) also reaffirms this, mounted or not, at 0hp it's dead jim.

There may be something else in the Monster Manual or the DMG so I'll leave that to someone else to answer. But I've been looking into these rules quite a bit to figure out a way to refluff my mount to count as virtual dragonwings for my dragonborn, and since I'm starting to DM next week, I definitely will allow creative refluffing, even when some minor mechanical changes are required to make it work in edge cases.

A ranger's beast companion follows the PC death and dying rules (MP p 42).

I would rule that a normal mount (ie one that has been purchased as equipment rather than obtained via a class feature like the ranger's) is a normal monster and dies at 0 hp.

I'd go the other way. It doesn't matter how the mount was obtained; it's what it means that matters.

If the mount is just a means of travel, or a technical means to a mechanical ends in a player's build, then it dies at 0 hp. If the player is emotionally invested in the mount; if he mentions it in roleplay and spends his gp protecting and nurturing it, then you treat it just the way you would a PC.

after a quick look ...

if you look at the death and dying section of the Rules Compenium (or player's handbook), it talks about "when the player character goes below 0..." (emphasis added by me).
no where (that i've seen) in the monster manuals or DMG does it mention the same for nonplayer characters (which includes monsters, mounts, or even allied npcs, etc). Thus, I would say that a mount dies at 0 (not counting nonlethal damage).

The ranger's beast companion is given an exception to the rule, explicitly stating that it is treated as a player character for the purposes of being able to go below 0 into a dying state.

therefore, by raw, i'd say a mount (or any NPC, that includes allies) dies at 0.

However, this being an exception-based game system and DM having ultimate say-so, there is nothing from stopping the DM from saying the mount is an exception and follows the PC dying rules as well, which would let it go below 0.
