So I'm reading along in the 25th anniversary book of "Against the Giants" about the stronghold of the frost giants, and there's an encounter with a sleuth of grizzly bears.

The first thought through my head was, man, they can use that one to work out who killed their leader! Yes, the mystery is solved, all thanks to Encycopedia Bruin!

This cave is the home of a sleuth of grizzly bears..., animal friends of the [frost giant] clan... One recent addition to the sleuth is a young werebear named Groon....

I kid you not.

It was a bad pun, anyway.

Actually, a "sleuth of bears" is correct terminology.

I should have suspected EGG would go with the apparently wrong but actually right way of saying something. 1E was as much about vocabulary expansion as it was about kicking in the door and making off with the loot.
