multiclass attacks

I'm not sure about the rules for multiclassing and I don't have the book w me: If a fighter gets 2attacks at 6th lvl, and thief at 8th lvl, when does a multiclass fighter/thief get 2 attacks?

It's all determined by BAB.

Add the BABs of the two classes together. If it is +6 or greater, that means the PC has at least 2 itterative attacks.

By the way, a character's Base Attack Bonus is represented only by the very first number- so, for example, a 20th-level Fighter has a Base Attack Bonus of 20. So let's say you're a 4th-level Fighter, with a BAB of +4. Then, you take 2 levels of Rogue. Since, in two levels of Rogue, you get +1 BAB, you add that to your +5, for a total of +5. If you take one more level of Fighter, that becomes +6, which is enough to give you an iterative attack (at +1).

Basically, you add the first numbers together to get your BAB. If it's higher than 6, or 11, or 16, you get extra attacks.

The mechanic is BAB (Normal) and -5 for each iterative attack (you must have at a least a +1 result to qualify for an additional attack) up to a max of 5 iterative attacks.

You may also take a single off hand attack attack - but the rules get more complicated then and it depends on what feats you have, type of weapon, etc.

Note that you must use the full attack option to take more than one attack a round (i.e., you can't move other than a 5 ft step).

Actually, for a character with zero monster levels, just class levels, the maximum is THREE iterative attacks, not 5.

+20 BAB =

+20 (main attack)
+15 (iterative)
+10 (iterative)
+5 (iterative)
