I took over a campaign that had existing history and started using a new module with a historical event at the same time period. So far when someone mentioned that the two events were close in time I have nodded and said, yes, it appears it is the same time period and gave them significant looks but kept mum. They expect a neat revelation about connections but I didn't notice the timeline coincidences when I started running the new module and I'm trying to tie them together in my head story wise in a way that makes sense. Now the PCs are asking an elf from that time period how they interacted so I'm going to have to come up with something concrete. In the old campaign there is a historical event from 300 years ago where the LG theocratic anti-demon empire imposed an edict of deviltry and outlawed arcane magic in the empire without church registration and regulation. Mages who didn't submit and continued to practice magic were persecuted, some burned and one NPC contact of the party lost an arm in the turbulent times. In the new campaign I am running in the same world with the same characters past the far borders of the empire at roughly that same time a small CG elven arcane order came under assault by demon cultists and being overrun they called on the LG empire who sent out an army of clerics and paladins to fight the cultists and defeated them although the head cleric was martyred and became a saint. Some of the army then settled a town there and was largely forgotten by the empire as it went into gradual decline over the centuries. The villagers and the elven order lived in peace and some of the villagers worked at the order and some even studied there and joined it while the town kept its church faith as well as an encroaching druid presence. They are not certain which came first, the cultist stomping or the empire arcane banning. Any suggestions on how to tie these two events together? The church/empire has fought many demon cults over the centuries and outlawed worship of evil gods and fiends and put restrictions on lycanthropes within the empire. They have orders of witch hunters, an order of registered wizards loyal to the church are a demon hunting inquisition, and there are demon hunting paladin orders among the church ranks, as well as lawful justiciars and archons. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
