Multiple Times

Is there anything in the rules that prevents a multi-optional template like 'Half-Dragon' (MM1) or 'Monster of Legend' (MM2) being taken multiple times so long as different options are selected each time?

I'm not exactly where it says it, but I know that you can't take them multiple times. If you can, there's an exception in it, like under Evolved Undead, which specifically states that you can take it multiple times.

However, I would make a slight exception for say, half-dragon, but only in the sense that one could have multiple breath weapons, or a combination of such as covered in the Draconomicon. But that's a house-rule, there.

Reverse the question: what templates can you think of that note they can be taken multiple times?

Evolved undead is the only one I can think of.

It's sort of like taking a given feat multiple times - the default answer is no, you can't unless the feat goes out of its way to say you can.

Half-Dragon, there is - the first template gives the creature the Dragon type, and the second template can only be applied to 'Any non-Dragon'...

Monster of Legend is just flat-out not worth it to take more than once, most of the time. There are better things to buy with that CR.

(Disclaimer: Yes, I know that someone will come in and flame me for telling a DM to optimize. My position has always been that a DM ought to be at least aware of the tradeoffs in monster creation. Do your worst.)

If a DM isn't optimizing, at least to an extent, what's going on with that game?

Though, MoL has an abyssmally low CR adjustment for what you get.

That said, I wouldn't take it more than once. For the same CR boost I could gain Chameleon and class levels.

Yeah, I dunno.. those stat and save adjustments on MoL are rather cherry.

Another template 'in between' can change it back, though.
