Yep, you read that right, my 4 year old boy. He's been pestering me for about a year to play Dungeons & Dragons with me, so with the Red Box, I saw an opportunity to teach him a little about the game.
So we started through the solo adventure, I would convert some of the larger words into things he could understand, and left a lot of the mechanics by the wayside opting to just ask him what he wanted to do next. He ended up making a wizard, giving him an interesting name (which I can't recall right now, I can look later if folks care but it was something like Polarbear Puffypants or equally silly... it had an animal and a descriptive name, that's all I can remember).
He took one hit from the kobold before blasting it to bits with his magic missile. Then we moved on to follow the red cloaked stranger (he asked me if the cloaks were the same as they were in mouse guard... cute I thought... he thinks heroes all wear cloaks). We roleplayed a little more, including the encounter outside the cave.
After about an hour he was done playing, and closed with this gem: "Daddy, next time I want to be the monsters, because they are more fun." I think he's going to be a rat bastard DM at some point.
We plan to play again this weekend.
