My attempts at a mid level arctic campaign

This originally started as a one shot mission idea. The group couldn't meet as normal, so I had me and two of the three people that normally play. So I gave them each 13 levels to make a character with. The end result a level 7 ninja/level 6 ninja spy, and a level 11 psion/level 2 monk.

Anyway the characters are completely munchkin, but totally fun. I figure it is a one shot so might as well let them have a great time.

This is the mission outline. the characters are hired by a banker to escort a wagon over the mountain pass to the city on the other side. The banker wants extra guards because of a severe snow storm could make ambushes much easier.

The party sets out over the mountain pass when one of the scouts comes back to the party saying that he saw someone out in the snow, someone very large. Upon investigating, it is a 15 foot tall albino frost giant. Two peculiar details, he has a seven foot tall blue crystal sword, and a giant owl companion.

The players confront the giant, who fights savagely, if the tides turn against the giant he pulls out a horn and blows on it, the resounding boom sets off an avalanche. Suddenly a fierce wind and heavy fog raises from nowhere, and the giant is lost while the characters are caught in an avalanche and slammed into the mountain walls that line the path.

When the characters go back they can ask why no one came to help them, the npcs reply they had to protect the wagon.

Now the caravan is stuck behind a massive avalanche with no way around it.
The banker says not to worry, the bad weather cant last for long. Indeed it doesnt in fact it suddenly completely dies down, and becomes balmy warm, the snow starts to melt and a couple hours later the snow is all gone.

So the party carries on. Anyway they travel a bit longer when they are set upon by ettins (I made them into frost ettins) the caravan manages to run them off. However within half a day they return and fight even more violently. While the characters are fighting they notice a massive shadow fall over the area, suddenly the strongbox is lifted from the ground and into the air by a collosal white dragon. The frost ettins leave and the party is left to consider their situation.

The banker seems overjoyed. He tells them that he can follow the trail of the wagon because of enchantments upon it.

So they follow him off the trail and out into the lands of the snowy mountain range.

Encounters during this time. The players come to the breeding grounds of a frost worm, a few rounds into the battle a remorhaz shows up attacking the party and the frost worm.

Another encounter with before mention frost giant, whom is actually the dragon in shapechanged form.

Anyway real plot idea. The dragon is actually a half fiend white dragon, and the banker is a half celestial wizard. The banker is hunting the dragon and using the dragons greed as a way to locate it. He will use the party to kill the dragon if possible, but will use his celestial abilities if in a tough spot. the whole time though he insists that he is just a banker, claiming that any good fortune is the work of the gods.

VERY NICE wolfpunk.

i love arctic adventures. i injoy freaking my players out and heavy snow and isolation do very well to that effect! do the dragon and the banker have a back story? or are they just enemies because of the planer difference?

Well, unfortunately, I havent gotten to play this mission out much farther. I was indeed hoping to create a backstory for the dragon and the banker. Not to mention it is difficult to create the backstory and bring it out into game play without giving away what is going on. Of course once the party helps defeat the dragon, what do they care about the backstory. Had to make time for details when you are dividing treasure.

Anyway, what I am kind of wondering is, do you have any ideas for other little events I could throw in. Or a good idea for a backstory and a way to involve it into the plot.

i'm still really new to the whole DM thing, wolfpunk (thanks for all yuor help on my other threads by the way) but lets see what i can think up hmm i love to run gothy or just horror inspired adventures. So being the dead of winters a horrible snow storm could happen again right? and they could lose track of each other right? how about just having them brave the outdoors by them selves plus it's always fun to throw a nice sized baddie thier way once they find each other again and seeing as they've been out in the cold you could temp lower their abilites or even say the cold and ice has damaged armor or weapons so this monster that they could beat on any other day turns in to (figurativly speaking of course) a very hard to stop juggernaut like beast

josh a thought hmm and the back story thing? well i'm not to good at those

Just dropping the temperature can cause lots of problem. I know all about it considering I used to live in alaska. Perhaps defeating the dragon causes some sort of terrible afttermath. Or I am thinking, since the demon is half fiend, the dragon could use summon monster spell to summon a bunch of fiends many of whom get away, and now the pcs have to track them down and destroy them. Kind of simple, but makes for good combat.
