My character concept is ruined by the Rules!

First Post
I had this amazing idea to play a character based off of the comic book character Harry Kipling from 2000 AD. Basically, he is an old time british big game hunter (like the guy from Jumangi---topee, elephant gun, and all). However, he is also a zombie. And a Proactive Atheist. Thats right, a Proactive Atheist. Hes out to hunt the Gods.

Well I figured with DDI's Revenant Race, I could model this concept quite well. As far as class, I chose Avenger. Instead of choosing a deity, I would choose Atheism (and basically hunt every god and/or their followers).

[Side note: in order to get along with Clerics/Paladins in the group, the character would work with them until they led him to their deity. Then he would kill both the deity and the follower. A very gentleman like agreement....]

This all fell apart when I chose to use a crossbow (as opposed to the elephant gun). Well after making my entire character I finally noticed that the Avenger's powers only work with a MELEE weapon.

Now I have less than an hour to retool the character. But taking away the crossbow kinda ruins the visual of the hunter to me....

Any ideas on how to save Mortimer Wormwood, Gentleman/Undead Hunter of the Gods?

Should I just switch to a melee weapon? Change classes? Ditch the concept?

Ask the DM if you can use a crossbow?

What level is the character? Is it possible a magic item might let you use a melee weapon as a ranged one?

Perhaps change him to be a ranger. Still a striker, after all.

Revenant, Rogue, with an eye on the Godhunter (or whatever name it has) epic destiny from Martial Power. It has a utility power called "Deicidal Eye", f'r crying out loud. Take a Superior Crossbow as your weapon.

:erm: Why would your first choice for making a ranged atheist character be a melee-specialist acrobatic divine class? Try rogue, or ranger, or seeker, or bard, or artificer.

Or use an implement that looks like a hunting rifle instead of a crossbow that looks like a hunting rifle, and try cleric or wizard or warlock or sorcerer or druid.

My first choice would have to be seeker.

You definitely want to start heading for the Godhunter epic destiny, so multiclass into rogue or ranger if you're not one already.

Yeah, pretty much the problem point was when you picked up one of the most focussed melee specialists in the game for a character that's fundamentally a ranged combatant.

That said, avengers DO get a few ranged attacks that use implements IIRC: you could just make sure to choose those and make a big thing of it whenever you use them.

Holy symbol implements don't even need to be wielded, and you can just reflavour the power as coming through your bow.

You'll still need to spend a fair amount of time in melee (perhaps just make it a really big crank-once-per-combat crossbow...)

Yeah, I'd follow either Klaus or Inyssius on this one.

I like the idea of an elephant-gun styled implement. Perhaps a Con-based Warlock (Star, Vestige or Infernal)?

Cheers, -- N

Oh, forgot to mention invokers on the list of implement classes which would work. I think they fit pretty well with the (faulty) conception you originally had of the avenger.

The concept does work - as pointed out there is even an epic destiny for just such a thing.

You simply chose the wrong class for the concept. Others have already suggested good fixes. I like the sound of rogue or ranger for this one myself.

Not sure you needed the whole 'the rules ruined my concept'. I was more like your choices ruined you concept, but as stated there are esy fixes. I am interested to see where you went with this and whether it worked :)
